METHODS OF TEACHING ENGLISH
As we are aware that English is the most widely used second language in India. It has become an integral part of business, commerce, and education. It is essential to teach English to the students in an effective and efficient manner so they can easily grasp and understand it. Several languages are spoken in India and these languages also influence the learning of English. Sometimes they become an obstacle in learning of English.
GRAMMAR CUM TRANSLATION METHOD
This is also known as the classical method of teaching English. It is based on the assumption that a foreign language can be learnt through translation. in this method, the teacher reads the text and translate into mother-tongue. Meaning of each and every word is explained in the mother tongue.
Merits
1. It is easy and economical.
2. It is easy for students because they can understand better the meaning of foreign words.
3. It is helpful in developing the art of translation.
4. Pupil can comprehend the text easily.
Demerits
1. It is suitable for lower classes but not suitable for higher classes complete translation is not possible for all the expression of English.
2. It does not deal with the other aspects of language learning viz. pronunciation, articulation, and intonation etc.
3. It is suitable for the translation of words and a limited number of sentences.
4. It acts as an obstacle to the learner to think in English.
5. It lay emphasis more on rules and becomes dull and boring.
6. The complicated expression of English cannot be learnt through this method.
DIRECT METHOD
Direct method came as a reaction to Grammar cum translation method. It is also called a natural method. It was developed in France and further flourished in Germany in 1900's.
It is based on philosophy that Fluency in reading and facility in writing follow fluency in speech. It was realised that a foreign language can be learnt in natural atmosphere.

Franke (1884) put forth a proposition that monolingual language teaching could be effective by associating form and meaning. Target language should be used actively in class and grammar rules must not be explained. The learner has to pick up the grammar of L2 as in the case of their L1, by exposing themselves to the language, inductively (Thornbury 2000).
Features
1. Focus on target language rather than on mother tongue/native language
2. Inductive method is used to teach grammar of target language.
3. Vocabulary and sentences are taught in target language.
4. Abstract vocabulary is taught through associating them with real life event, pictures etc.
5. communication in target language is given foremost importance.
6. Pronunciation and grammar is more importance.
