Many thinkers and educated reformers of the world under the theories and thoughts to minimize the effects of wrong system of education. There views were welcomed by the conscious members of the society and this brought time-to-time improvement revolution and betterment of the education system.
We remember some of the prominent of these thinkers like Karl Marx., Jean Paul Sartre, Mahatma Gandhi, Doctor Zakir Hussain but perhaps, no body in this century has made the world so acutely aware of the subversive potential of education as Paulo Reglus Neves Freire, a Brazilian educationist and thinkers who made classroom and arena of empowerment for the poor and oppressed.
Freire considered education to be a weapon of libration for those marginalized people whose voices are never heard by the dominant classes. Paulo Freire system was based on educational process that concentrated entirely on the social environment of the students.He claimed that students should be expected to understand the social reality in which the lives as a fundamental part of their learning activities.
Contribution of Paulo Freire
Freire was able to draw upon and weave together and number of strands of thinking about educational practices and educational texts. Freire certainly made a number of important theoretical innovations that have had a considerable impact on the development of education practice and informal education and popular education.
He summarised his philosophy, method of work and the abstract realities of his working environment in his celebrated and widely acclaimed book "pedagogy of the oppressed."
Aspects of Freirian education
1. The aim of education is radical transformation.
2. Relevant education-Generative themes- empowerment.
3. Emphasis on Dialogue- It is necessary part in the process of education and transformation. tradition education is considered as simply the passing on information_"One who knows" to "who do not know". Freire refers this as Banking concept of education in which the students are the depositories and the teachers are the depositor. To tackle this , he proposed Dialogical method of education which can provide generative themes, problematization of situation and real & direct participation of the studentsin teaching learning process.
4. Cycle of action and reflection- this process is termed as praxis
5. Conscientization- developing consciousness
